We all know SMS donations are useful to the sector to drive low value, high volume donations from TV, print, radio, so I’m expecting a lot of interest in the new SMS lottery short code.
This is a 5 digit code for your raffle or lottery entry which is a direct entry to the game, with the money coming off your supporters’ phone bill.
Up to now this hasn’t been possible unless you use a premium number. The cost of these makes the overall campaign prohibitive due to overbearing costs. Luckily, this is all about to change later this year.
As with SMS donations, I expect to see a high uptake. The demographics prize-led fundraising appeals to want to donate small amount of money – and they want to do that when the moment takes them – mobile first.
The real challenge for charities is offering a raffle or lottery that can be played offline/by post (keeping the existing loyal supporter base happy), online/mobile, face-to-face and by SMS.
