I recently read 'Doing Good Better' by William Macaskill (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doing-Good-Better-Effective-Difference/dp/1592409105).
The book highlights how much more money we have in the developed world, in fact, chances are that you and I are in the top 2% of the world's richest people.
The disgraceful gap between rich and poor actually means that we can make huge huge changes to other people's lives, without it majorly affecting your life at all. It costs from $3400 to save a life (mosquito nets), you are better off donating to Cool Earth to offset your carbon footprint than worrying about that extra flight, and money that you give a family in some areas will have 100 or even 500x the impact than that money has to the life of you or I.
When you think of working for good, you think of becoming a doctor, working for a charity or volunteering abroad. However, if I went to volunteer to dig a well, I'd be rubbish. Better I stay here and earn money doing what I do best and give money so that someone that is skilled to dig a well does that instead.
Businesses can give money and pay less Corporation Tax, but until now I haven't found a really easy way for businesses to give to charity.
In fact, my work with the charity sector tells me that the Corporate Teams have to be selective over which businesses they give time to, as every business they work with takes them time and resource that could be spent pitching a multi-million Charity of the Year. Small charities want to do everything but they have to pick what will give them the best returns.
The Work For Good platform (www.workforgood.co.uk) was shared with me the same week as I was bought the Doing Good Better book. I've decided to 'earn to give' (5% in my first year of trading), and Work For Good make it easy for me, and easy for the charity. My business doesn't need to deal with the charity directly. I did get in touch with Cool Earth to tell them about the platform, but Work For Good will do that for you if you nominate a charity. I'm delighted Cool Earth joined the platform - it happened within a day, very easy.
I'm hoping they and the other charities benefit from other businesses like mine, and much bigger businesses taking advantage of this innovation which I believe is transformative for Corporate Donations in the charity sector.
I'm busy working on my blog posts. Watch this space!
